In less than a year, February 2009, broadcast television is out, and like most everything else all television signals will be upgraded to digital You may need an upgrade and you still have time before the analog signals go the way of dinosaurs. The problem is 20% of all US households still received their television signals through antennas. That means there is a lot of work to be done.

Even if you don’t use an antenna, you may need to make some changes. Some cable and phone company TV customers who plug the wire directly into their sets might need to get a set-top box or adapter from their provider.

The government is going to help, offering two $40 coupons per household to help buy converter boxes for older analog TVs. Those coupons are going fast now that converter boxes have hit the shelves of major retailers. Nearly 15 million coupons have been redeemed since the program began Jan. 1 — and the government is going to hand out only 33.5 million That’s a good enough reason not to wait. It can be confusing to figure out exactly what you need to do to keep your TV from going dark.

Waiting to the last minute is not a good idea. learning the new terminology will confuse many people. Purchasing a converter box may seem like the best option, but the excuse to buy a new television, gets better everyday And who doesn’t want a new television?
